Next Meet the Doctors

I am so excited to present to all of you a book that was written by my dear friend, Shani Thornton. She is a child life expert who is also going to be offering some seminars in our wellness center in the next few months. The book is entitled "Time For You Checkup". It is a book she wrote to help prepare children and families for what will occur at a doctor visit. All of the photographs in the book are of our office and of me being the doctor. Both my daughters, my husband, Shani and her sons are in the book as well. There will be copies of this book in the waiting rooms to help kids prepare for their visits. If you want to get the book in advance, it is available in paper and kindle on Amazon. At Happy and Healthy Pediatrics we are very concerned about having the children in our practice have a positive experience here during their visits. Visit this link for more information and details on how to get your very own book:

Flu Vaccine Update:

We are having a “Flu Clinic in the office Saturday October 25 from 1pm-5pm. You do NOT NEED to make an appointment on clinic day. Just come in during those hours and flu vaccines will be administered on a first come, first serve basis. We will have plenty of injectable and nasal vaccines available. All of the flu shots we have this year are preservative free. The flumist can be administered to anyone from 2 years of age through 49 with no other medical conditions. Here are the complete Vaccine information sheets for this year’s flu shot and flumist. They explain fully about the vaccine and discuss any possible side effects.

Flu Vaccine by Appointment:

Starting Monday Sept 29th (We just got word that our flu vaccine shipments will arrive by the end of this week), we will also be offering appointment times weekly for flu vaccines with Dira. If you would prefer to make an appointment with Dira, please call the office.

The schedule for flu vaccine appointments with Dira is as follows:
Monday: 3pm-7pm
Wednesday: 9am-5pm
Thursday: 9am-5pm
Friday: 10am-3pm

Entire families can be vaccinated (including grandparents, nannies, breastfeeding mothers, etc). People 65 years of age and older should get the vaccine from their own physician; that age group requires a higher dose vaccine that we do not stock.

Whenever possible we will bill the insurance. If we do not participate with the insurance (like Medicare for some of the grandparents) then the fee will be $35 (for the shot or mist). We expect this year’s “flu clinic” to run very smoothly and have planned the event in such a way as to minimize wait times. We will have a full staff here and several stations vaccinating at the same time.

The flu vaccine is recommended FOR ALL CHILDREN over the age of 6 months.
The number of vaccine doses your child needs this year depends on his/her age at the time the first dose is given and the flu vaccine history.

  • Children 6 months through 8 years of age should get 2 doses (at least 30 days apart) if they did not get a flu vaccine last year. If they did get two flu vaccines between July 2010 and last season, then they will only need one dose this year. If they got only one dose in this time frame, then they will require 2 doses of the flu vaccine one month apart this year.

  • Children 9 years and older need only 1 dose

We have given thousands of doses of both vaccines over the years, AND WE HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY SIGNIFICANT SIDE EFFECTS. The most common side effect from the shot is a sore arm for 1-2 days.

"The vaccine is very safe and effective," said Allison Aiello, associate professor of epidemiology at the University Of Michigan School Of Public Health. "There is a myth that the vaccine causes individuals to get influenza. This is not true and side effects of the vaccine are very rare. The most common side effect is simply soreness at the site of injection. Benefits greatly outweigh any risks associated with the vaccine."
